Arithmacy Very few Hogwarts students take this complicated course. Those who take arithmancy consider themselves intelligent, and are willing to learn and take on the challenge of this complex study. Arithmancy is often considered boring, except by Hermione, who greatly enjoys this subject! Some of the work includes studying the magical art of numbers and equations, and very complicated number charts.

Care Of Magical Creatures A class that used to be dreaded by every one, was once taught by the legendary Hagrid. Care of Magical creatures involves the feeding, handling, and controlling of different magical creatures. With Hagrid as a teacher, you can always expect to meet dangerous and strange creatures, such as Blast-Ended Skrewts, and creatures that others consider dangerous, but Hagrid is able to tame, such as Thestrals, and Hippogriffs. When Hagrid was in charge, many students considered the class to be full of excitement; others however, sometimes consider it dangerous, and too over-the-top.

Divination Although Professor Trelawney believed she possessed a rare gift of 'Seeing the future', many considered her predictions to be absolute rubbish. The Divination classroom is located in the North Tower of Hogwarts, and usually smells of burning incense. The other past teacher of Divination was Firenze. Being Firenze is a centaur, he has a very different outlook on the subject of Divination. He believes Divination is much more useful for predicting major changes and important events, rather than Trelawney who uses it to predict day-to-day events.

Bathrooms There are numerous bathrooms throughout the school. There are two for the Prefects, a girls’ and a boys’, which not only can they use, but Quidditch Captains as well. The teachers have a few scattered around the school, but you’ll rarely see a teacher enter. The boys have bathrooms on different floors as well. And the girls…well the girls have a bathroom on the second floor, but no one really goes in there. For, it is Moaning Myrtle’s bathroom. Myrtle was a Ravenclaw student at Hogwarts in 1943 when she was killed by the Basilisk from the Chamber of Secrets. She had been hiding in that bathroom because she was being teased by Olive Hornby. Then she heard someone come in and heard that person speaking. She realized it was a boy, so she opened her stall to tell him to get out of the girls' bathroom, only to find herself face to face with the Basilisk. Ever since then, she has inhabited this bathroom. It’s a good place to go if you want to do something in secret-like brew some Polyjuice Potion for instance…

Black Lake The Lake sits in the shadow of the castle, making its waters often cold. Many creatures can be found in its murky depths, but it is mainly inhabited by the giant squid. Some students make stupid dares to swim, others swim on their own risk.

Forbidden Forest To the east of Hogwarts castle is a large, dark forest. This forest is strictly off limits to Hogwarts students, except in the course of occasional Care of Magical Creatures lessons or detentions. Fred and George Weasley have spent quite a bit of time trying to get into it, naturally. The forbidden forest is sometimes referred to as the Forbidden Forest but often as just "the forest." The forest is thick with trees -- beech, oak, pine, sycamore, and yew are mentioned, as well as undergrowth such as knotgrass and thorns -- but there are paths, brooks, and some clearings. Off the path, the way is almost impassable, although people have moved through it and creatures as large as Acromantulas and a Ford Anglia have managed to get around.

Pumpkin Patches These pumpkin patches are located not far from Hagrid's old hut. The pumpkin patch is known for growing abnormally large pumpkins, some as big as a human, if not bigger! Some students like to come and sit in the pumpkin patch, finding it a good hiding place to just get away from it all.
Whomping Willow The Hogwarts tree is rooted to the spot, but it will lash out at anyone who comes too close. Planted in the year that Remus Lupin came to school at Hogwarts, it has grown to a good height and become quite dangerous. In its early days, students often goaded it to attack so they could duck the blows, but this was eventually stopped as it became too risky. The tree serves as more than an example in aggressive botany, however: it was planted to enable werewolf Remus Lupin to attend the school. The Willow covers one of the few remaining secret passages into and out of Hogwarts, this one leading into the abandoned and boarded Shrieking Shack in Hogsmeade. Lycanthropy not being a popular trait, Lupin would use this tunnel to spend every full moon in the Shack. As a side-effect, the Shack gained a reputation as the most haunted place in Britain because villagers in nearby Hogsmeade would hear Lupin go through the painful ordeal of turning into a werewolf. The tree can be temporarily disabled by pressing a knot in its trunk, enabling safe passage. (In the film, the tree is shown being disabled with the "Immobulous Charm".) Only a few people know of its purpose and use; unfortunately, this includes the right-hand-man of Lord Voldemort, Wormtail.

Lawns Located just outside of the castle, students come out here to enjoy a sunny day at Hogwarts, or to study. There are of course, a few oddballs who enjoy the wet, or cold weather. Many students enjoy the soft rolling grass and usually just relax out here. The lawns have a nice view of the Black Lake, close enough to enjoy its beauty, but far enough away to not be eaten by the squid.

The Hog's Head The Hog's Head is another pub, which often attracts a more unusual and private clientele than the Three Broomsticks, and many of the customers hide their faces. The hanging sign on the front of the pub has a severed boar's head, leaking blood onto the white cloth around it. The pub itself is filthy, with the floor covered with layers of dirt, and the windows smeared with so much grime that little light gets through. The main floor is a single room, but there are additional rooms on the upper floors. Harry notes that the pub smells strongly of goats. The bartender is Aberforth, the brother of Hogwarts Headmaster Albus Dumbledore.

Shrieking Shack This house is supposed to be the most haunted building in Britain, and even the Hogwarts ghosts avoid it. Fred and George Weasley once tried to get in and failed. When James Potter and his friends were in school, Remus Lupin used this house during his monthly transformation into a werewolf to stay isolated from the students. He was brought there every month by Madam Pomfrey and it was the transformations that caused the rumour of the shack being haunted. This house is where the encounter between Sirius Black, Peter Pettigrew, Severus Snape, Remus Lupin, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger takes place. The only known way to access it is by a passageway underneath the Whomping Willow tree on the Hogwart's grounds.

Fred and George had planned to buy the shop, but decide against it when Hogwarts' students are banned from visiting Hogsmeade due to heightened security after Voldemort's rebirth.

Diagon Alley
The Leaky Cauldron The Leaky Cauldron is a pub and inn for wizards, offering food, drinks and rooms to rent. It was founded by Daisy Dodderidge (1467–1555) in 1500 "to serve as a gateway between the non-wizarding world and Diagon Alley." The current barman and innkeeper is Tom. There are a number of rooms available; Harry has stayed in Room 11, which has a talking mirror and windows that allow him to look out onto Charing Cross Road. The inn also has a bar, several private parlour rooms and a large dining room for guests to dine. People often stay at The Leaky Cauldron when they come up to London on shopping trips; there is no mention of other wizarding hotels or inns in Diagon Alley. The rear of The Leaky Cauldron opens onto a "chilly little courtyard" just off of Diagon Alley, but the pub faces onto Charing Cross Road. As such, it is a means of passing from between Diagon Alley and Muggle London.

Mulpepper's Apothecary The Apothecary sells potions and potion ingredients. The shop is "fascinating" despite its very bad smell — a mixture of bad eggs and rotten cabbage. The inside includes barrels of slimy stuff on the floor; jars of herbs, dried roots and bright powders on the shelves; and bundles of feathers, strings of fangs and snarled claws hanging from the ceiling. Some of the ingredients available are silver unicorn horns (for twenty-one Galleons each) and glittery-black beetle eyes (five Knuts a scoop).

Ollivander's Wands Ollivanders is a magic wand shop described as narrow and shabby, with a sign that reads Ollivanders: Makers of Fine Wands since 382 BC in peeling gold letters over the door. The only display is a single wand lying on a faded purple cushion in the dusty window and inside there are countless narrow boxes piled neatly right up to the ceiling. Mr. Ollivander, the pale-eyed, white-haired shopkeeper, makes and sells magic wands to witches and wizards as they enter school or break their old wands. He remembers each and every wand he has ever sold. To determine the best wand for a witch or wizard, Mr Ollivander measures various body parts (including, in Harry's case, between his nostrils) and then checks the reactions of various wands to the buyer, a process he refers to as "the wand choosing the wizard."

Azkaban Wizards who violate the laws of the British wizarding world are sent here. Only one other such prison; Nurmengard, is known to exist. Generally, only very severe crimes are punished with a term in Azkaban. Many of the prisoners were supporters of Lord Voldemort, though some misunderstandings have resulted in others' imprisonment. Rubeus Hagrid, for example, was sent here in Harry Potter's second year at Hogwarts because of a crime he did not commit.

St.Mungo's Medics at the hospital are not called doctors, but are known as Healers or Mediwizards and wear lime-green robes. Founded by famous wizard Healer Mungo Bonham, St Mungo's is located in London. To enter the premises, one has to step through the window of what appears to be a derelict department store called Purge and Dowse Ltd. The exteriors of the hospital are red-bricked and dirty, which is the complete opposite of the interiors. Inside, everything is very neat and looks exactly as a hospital should. There are six floors. The emblem of St Mungo's is a magic wand crossed with a bone. Mungo Bonham could have been named after the historical Saint Mungo (also known as Kentigern), who was the patron saint of Glasgow. "Mungo" was a nickname meaning "dear one" or "darling". He is considered the first bishop of Scotland. According to the stories about him, his pregnant mother was abandoned by her family before his birth. Also, according to a fifteenth century fragment, often called "Lailoken and Kentigern," Lailoken, who is often associated with the Arthurian wizard Merlin, and who figures prominently as a trope in the Harry Potter series, has gone mad at the battle between Liddel and Carwannok. St. Mungo comes upon him, and Lailoken confesses that he is responsible for the deaths in that battle. Enventually, Lailoken begs St. Mungo to administer the sacrament of the Eucharist to him, which the saint does after some reluctance.

Platform 9-¾ The train starts from King's Cross railway station platform 9-¾, which is invisible to Muggle eyes and is reached by walking through the barrier between platforms 9 and 10. Prefects of the school ride in a separate carriage near the front of the train. The compartments on the train appear to be lettered; in book 6, for example, the Slug Club meet in compartment C, which is probably near the back of the train. Upon disembarking the train at Hogsmeade Station, first years undergo the traditional boat-journey across the lake with the Keeper of Keys and Grounds to Hogwarts; all other students are carried to the main entrance of the castle in coaches drawn by magical creatures called thestrals (which most students cannot see as thestrals can only be seen by those who have witnessed death).

Ministry Of Magic
Visitor's Entrance (10 sub-boards) A visitor to the Ministry of Magic comes to a broken-down red telephone box located on a dingy street which has several shabby offices, a pub, and a wall covered with graffitti. When the telephone in the box is dialed, the welcome witch's voice answers, not from the phone but from the air as if the person is standing right there. Visitors must state their business, upon which a silver badge pops out with the visitor's name and purpose of visit. Then the telephone box drops down like a lift for about one minute, after which the visitor is in the Atrium.
